Why Do Chemical Peels Improve Damaged Skin?

Chemical peels

Chemical peels are a great treatment option for those who want to improve the appearance of their skin without undergoing surgery and dealing with the complications and downtime often associated with conventional plastic surgery. A peel works by triggering the formation of new skin tissue displaying fewer signs of aging or sun damage. There are three basic types of peels: superficial, medium, and deep. Each type involves different chemicals and different concentrations of those chemicals.

How It Works

As the name suggests, a chemical peel is simply some type of chemical solution that is applied to the skin to remove some of the outer skin. This triggers the formation of new skin tissue and a new collagen matrix to reduce the appearance of many common skin problems. Many peels do not even require significant downtime.

Peels for Dull Skin

A superficial chemical peel is best-suited for those dealing with enlarged pores, superficial acne scars, and skin that is dull and lifeless. It is used to remove the buildup of dead skin cells and cellular debris often found on the surface of the skin. This material normally sloughs off, but can build up and block the natural radiance of fresher skin underneath.

Light Lines and Wrinkles

Medium peels tend to be the best treatment choice for problems like light wrinkles, minor scars, and uneven pigmentation. This type of peel usually involves the application of a chemical solution that is able to remove some of the epidermis skin layer and trigger the production of new skin tissue.

Deep Wrinkles and Scars

If you are dealing with deeper scars and wrinkles, deep chemical peels are often the best treatment choice, although it all depends on the unique situation. That’s one of the reasons why an initial consultation is so important.
