What is Psoriasis?

Often characterized as an itchy, red rash that does not go away on its own, Psoriasis is the result of skin cells growing at an abnormally fast rate, resulting in lesions. Although there is no known cause of Psoriasis, genetics and the immune system are thought to play major factors in its development. It is an autoimmune disease, which occurs when the immune system identifies healthy cells as invaders and attacks them. Although up to 10 percent of the population is thought to have one of the genetic markers associated with Psoriasis, only about 2-3 percent actually develop the disease.

Psoriasis can develop at any age and in multiple areas of the body, including the:

  • Outside of the elbows
  • Knees
  • Scalp
  • Skin folds
  • Torso

What are the Symptoms of Psoriasis?

Men and women who develop this skin condition often experience:

  • Rashes
  • Dryness
  • Flakiness
  • Peeling
  • Skin thickness
  • Redness

These symptoms can vary from patient to patient and can be experienced in multiple combinations. As these symptoms can also be associated with other common skin conditions, it is important to have your skin properly diagnosed and treated in order to have the best results.

How is Psoriasis Treated?

Treatments for this condition can vary depending on the severity of your Psoriasis and your skin type. Over-the-counter products often do not effectively manage this condition and can sometimes trigger further irritation, but at River Region Dermatology and Laser, Dr. Love and our medical team are highly trained in the medical diagnosis and treatment of multiple skin conditions, including Psoriasis.

There are multiple factors that can trigger this skin condition, including stress, skin injuries, infections, and certain medications, and identifying if any of these apply to your condition can help manage your symptoms.

Contact River Region Dermatology and Laser today to schedule a consultation at our Montgomery office and find out more information about the medical diagnosis and treatment of Psoriasis.
