What is Skin Cancer Prevention?

Although skin cancer can develop at any stage of life and in multiple places on the body, there are protective measures you can take to significantly reduce the risk of developing skin cancer. At River Region Dermatology and Laser, we encourage our patients to take a proactive approach to skin cancer by adopting protective measures before signs of skin cancer develop.

Sun Protection

Prolonged exposure to the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun is responsible for not only premature aging of the skin but is a major factor in the development of skin cancer. Sun bathing and even using tanning beds regularly can permanently damage your skin and should be avoided.  It should also be noted that reflective surfaces such as water and snow reflect the sun’s rays, increasing the likelihood of a burn.

Proper Sunscreen Application

When you do spend time outdoors, a broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher should be generously applied both 15 minutes prior to going outside and every two hours. If you are unsure of which sunscreen brands are the best, our medical team can make recommendations based on your unique skin type.

Skin Cancer Treatment

In cases where skin cancer has been diagnosed, we offer multiple treatment options at River Region Dermatology and Laser depending on the severity and location of the mass. It is important for patients to monitor their own skin and frequently look for changes such as growths, discolorations, and evolutions of existing moles and to have these skin changes evaluated by our medical team. While not all growths are cancerous, the best way to find out is to schedule a consultation at our Montgomery office.

There are multiple types of skin cancer, and the earlier the identification and diagnosis, the better the chances will be of completely removing the mass from your skin before it evolves or spreads to other areas of the body.
