At River Region Dermatology & Laser in Montgomery, AL, we strongly believe that everyone should be comfortable in his or her skin. However, chronic dark circles beneath the eyes can make people incredibly self-conscious, especially when makeup is inadequate for covering them up. Today, we review whether Belotero Balance is an adequate solution to this common problem.

Is Belotero Balance Good for Beneath My Eyes?

Belotero Balance is the best dermal filler for treating the tear trough or orbital hollowing for clients with thin skin and fair skin. Clients with darker or thicker skin tend to have better luck with Juvederm Ultra and Restylane Silk.

Belotero is ideal for clients with thin or fair skin because of the unique manufacturing process it goes through, which makes it unable to create the tindle effect. The tindle effect refers to a bluish hue that can be seen through the skin in clients who have thin, fair skin. Juvederm and Restylane are ideal for use under the eyes in people with darker, thicker skin because the results last longer but they can cause the tindle effect in fair-skinned clients.

How Should I Prepare for Treatment?

To prepare for your Belotero Balance treatment session, ask your primary care physician if you can stop taking baby aspirin and any other NSAIDs you may be taking, such as naproxen, Aleve, Motrin or ibuprofen. If you get the green light from your PCP, take Tylenol if you feel any discomfort in the 72 hours before your treatment.

Get your daily workout in before you come in for treatment. You should not engage in any activity that can elevate your heart rate and blood pressure in the 24 hours following your treatment. Such activities include aerobic exercise, strenuous anaerobic exercise, sitting in a sauna or consuming over 200 milligrams of caffeine.

What Can I Expect During Treatment?

From start to finish, you can expect your treatment to last between 10 and 15 minutes. If you are concerned about feeling the needle penetrating your skin, please let us know during your initial consultation. We can provide you with a topical numbing cream before treatment so you won’t feel the injection. However, the needle is so fine that even without anesthetic, clients don’t feel pain.

What Results Can I Expect From This Treatment?

Our clients report that they look between three and four years younger after receiving treatment. More importantly, when it is performed under the eyes, people stop asking them if they are sick, stressed or tired.

While you may not look five years younger like you could with an invasive procedure, nothing beats the convenience of a 10-minute treatment, no downtime or recovery, no pain or discomfort and an all-natural look.

How Long Will I Have to Wait to See Results?

You will see an initial improvement in the appearance of the targeted site immediately. However, you must wait two weeks to see the final results of the treatment. If your results aren’t perfect after two weeks, call us at River Region Dermatology and Laser to schedule a touch-up treatment.

How Long Do the Results Last?

As with other dermal fillers, the longevity of results varies on a case-by-case basis. On average, you can expect the results of your treatment to last between three and nine months. We recommend you schedule an appointment about 10 weeks after your initial treatment so we can evaluate your results and see if you need another treatment yet.

When Is the Right Time for Treatment?

If you are concerned about your current aesthetic now and you don’t have a major event scheduled in the near future, now is the right time to schedule your initial consultation. If you have a major event in four to six weeks, let us know when you schedule your initial consultation. We may be able to perform your treatment on the same day as your consultation.

Can This Treatment Be Used Anywhere Else?

Absolutely! Because this treatment features the active ingredient hyaluronic acid (HA), it can be used to add volume to any part of your body that is experiencing wrinkles due to collagen loss. For instance, clients often receive injections in their neck, temples and hands. This is because the skin in these areas is so thin that they show the signs of aging quickly.

Am I a Good Candidate for This Treatment?

The only way to know for sure that you are a good candidate for this treatment is to come in for an initial consultation. During this initial consultation, we will review your medical history, current health, current aesthetic and aesthetic goals to determine if this is the ideal treatment method for you.

In general, the best candidate for this treatment is between the ages of 18 and 65 and is concerned about the appearance of dark circles under the eyes as well as superficial facial lines and wrinkles. However, you may also be a good candidate if you are neither pregnant nor nursing and concerned about the appearance of:

  • Nasolabial folds
  • Atrophic scars
  • Marionette lines
  • Vermillion border
  • Lips
