In Need of Acne Scar Treatment? Try a Chemical Peel

acne scar treatment

Acne is a very common skin condition experienced by many teenagers and young adults. The condition causes pimples and redness, primarily on the face. Although the condition normally resolves itself eventually, it can leave unpleasant reminders in the form of scars. Acne scars can really have a detrimental effect on vulnerable young people that lingers on into adulthood. Many people have been helped by undergoing an acne scar treatment in the form of a chemical peel.

What Are Chemical Peels?

A chemical peel is a treatment that can be used for acne scars and other conditions. There are several different strengths available, depending upon the severity of your condition. Generally, chemical peels are solutions containing some form of chemical to peel away some part of the outer skin layer. This triggers a skin rejuvenation process and a resultant diminishment in the appearance of scars caused by injury, surgery, or acne.

Acne Scar Treatment Options

If your acne scars are very light, a superficial chemical peel may be enough to minimize or eliminate them. A very mild acid solution is used to peel away the very outer skin layer. Your body responds to the acne scar treatment by increasing its natural production of collagen. The only disadvantage to a light peel is that multiple treatments may be necessary for this very gentle form of treatment.

Moderate Acne Scars

A medium peel is best for light to moderate acne scars. It normally involves the use of a chemical called TCA to remove portions of the epidermis skin layer. Some sedation and light downtime may be needed when you undergo a medium peel.

Deep Acne Scar Treatment

When it comes to deep acne scars, a deep chemical peel using phenol or carbolic acid is often the only remedy. Although a deep peel does require sedation and significant downtime, it also offers great results for those suffering from deep acne scars.

Other Conditions

In addition to the treatment of acne scars, peels can be used to diminish the appearance of skin problems like sunspots, hyperpigmentation, stretch marks, and lines and wrinkles. If you have some of these conditions in addition to acne scars, a medium or deep peel can help to minimize them as well.
